Remedial Activities for Sec. 5 English Labs

Activities in these labs focus on reading comprehension and essay writing skills.

After reading a paragraph or short essay, students will be able to understand:

  • The vocabulary and expressions in context
  • The main idea(s) and the supporting details
  • The inferences and implications from the context
  • Organization of a paragraph (topic sentences and supporting points)
  • Identification and development of a short essay (introduction and thesis statements, support and analysis, and conclusions)

Students will develop their skills in writing sentences, paragraphs, and/or essay by:

  • using an English dictionary
  • expanding vocabulary, expression and idiomatic expressions, use of verbs, grammar points, syntax, spelling and punctuation correctly
  • developing a topic sentence, supporting points
  • Exploring the use of appropriate transitions within and between paragraphs
  • Writing an introduction with a clear thesis statement, using quotes from and references to  support a thesis, and writing clear conclusions
  • Developing, drafting, editing and re-writing a three paragraph essay
  • Learning to proofread, self-correct, edit and revise your writing for both form and content.
