Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make an appointment with a Dawson Counsellor?
Students who have never seen a counsellor in our service are invited to come to one of our drop-in times for a quick assessment. Follow-up appointments are then arranged as necessary.
What can I expect in my first meeting with a counsellor during a drop-in?
Your first meeting with a counsellor during a drop-in will focus on your reasons for coming. This private meeting will give the counsellor an opportunity to get an initial understanding of your situation, and will allow you to explore the range of possible actions that you may choose to pursue. A follow-up appointment will be made as necessary. Drop-ins are also useful if you have a quick question for the counsellor. Visit the portal for a schedule of drop-in times.
How can meeting with a counsellor help me?
Talking over your concerns or problems with a trained professional can help in a variety of ways. Students come to the Counselling Service to talk about confusion over future career and educational paths, goal-setting and other academic concerns. You may be struggling with an issue that is affecting your ability to focus on your studies effectively. Looking at the situation with a counsellor can provide new approaches to problem solving, as well as support and encouragement to make changes in your life. Personal issues such as depression, family troubles, anxiety, loss and grief, shyness, relationship problems, addictions, motivation and sexual orientation are examples of what can be discussed in counselling.
What if I need to see a counsellor urgently?
If you are in crisis, do not hesitate to come to our office in room 2D.2. You will be seen as quickly as possible by one of the counselling staff.
How can I be sure my privacy will be respected if I meet with a Dawson counsellor?
The professional code of ethics of our licensing body the Ordre des conseillers et conseillères d’orientation et des psychoéducateurs et psychoéducatrices du Québec ensures that client confidentiality is respected at all times. This means that whatever you discuss with a counsellor cannot be shared with anyone else, including parents or teachers, without your written permission.
What if I am not sure whether one of the workshops is right for me?
Come to one of our drop-in times and discuss it with a counsellor. We’ll be happy to meet with you and answer your questions.
