Keynote: Educational Technology: It’s about the Teaching First

According to the CBC, “we have seen a seismic shift in the way we value the traditional way to teach… [It ] began with the advent of computers, smart phones and tablets; then veered to learning from professors on screens, the proliferation of virtual classrooms and the launch of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses.)” This session explores more immediate issues that affect teaching in higher education, suggest ways that technology can support faculty in meeting those broader challenges, and closes by explaining why technology for teaching is about teaching first, technology second.
Workshop: If Your Students Are Glued To Their Phone Then Put Your Lectures On Their Phone

Technology: Swivl camera (http://www.swivl.com)
The Swivl Robot is a device upon which a smartphone, tablet or video camera can be mounted. The instructor wears a lanyard that the robot tracks so that the camera can follow them. The lanyard also includes a wireless microphone. Ken Fogel has been using this system starting in October 2015 to record his lectures and student presentations. At this presentation Ken will present the Swivl system and its software tools. Ken will talk about his experience with the system and the experience of his students. Workshop: Integrating Online Homework with In-Class Collaborative Learning

This presentation will show techniques, strategies, and tools use in flipped classroom pedagogy to improve student learning outcomes. Some of the techniques discussed will include methods of creating videos with Power Points, creating dynamic algorithmic problems in Moodle that are linked to the flipped classroom video, and Active learning collaborative class exercises using the Smart board.

Thinking of teaching online?
Preparing for online classes is not quite a simple transfer from the traditional classroom setting. Whether the online class is delivered in a synchronous or asynchronous approach, online teaching requires some “re-orientation” in order to effectively plan a pedagogical strategy to engage students in an online learning environment.
Join us for a “face-to-face” conversation as Chantale Giguère (synchronous methodology) and Helen Stavaris (asynchronous methodology) share some of their online instructional strategies.

The Brave New World of Educational Technology: Why Things Will change in Education during the Next Decade
Dr. Claude Martel
Claude holds a Ph.D. in Educational Technology from Concordia University and is a well-established practitioner and educator in the training and education Canadian community. He has been in the forefront in the development of Human Performance Technology practices and the implementation of distance education technology in large corporation and educational institutions.
He is a founding member and former President of multiple training and education association, like the eLearning Alliance and the Quebec chapter of the Canadian Society of Training and Development (CSTD) and he is the current chairman of the Canadian eLearning Enterprise Alliance (CeLEA), the national association of E-Learning producers.
In addition, he has managed over 60 projects and has implemented HR, communication and training technology solutions in over 30 large organizations.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Arshad Ahmad

Arshad Ahmad’s current teaching and research interests are in Accelerated Learning Designs, Conceptual Change, Teaching Philosophies and Excellence in Teaching.
He is the President of the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education www.stlhe.ca and Vice-President of The International Consortium for Educational Development consisting of 23 member organizations worldwide, http://icedonline.net. Both STLHE and ICED strive to improve educational practice and human learning in post-secondary education.
Arshad received his MBA and PhD in Educational Psychology at McGill University. He is presently Associate Professor of Finance in the John Molson School of Business (JMSB) at Concordia University. He is the recipient of several teaching and Professor of the Year awards from local and international universities. In 1992, he was recognized for leadership in teaching with a lifetime 3M National Teaching Fellowship – a program he coordinated for 10 years.
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Irving (Lee) Rother

Dr. Rother is a multi-award winning educator with 32 years of experience teaching, consulting and designing curriculum at the school, school board, university and provincial levels.
Currently, Dr. Rother is program developer and secondary teacher in Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board, where he teaches ICT, literacy, English Language Arts, and Media Education. Dr. Rother was also a consultant at the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board where his dossiers included English Language Arts, Co-operative Education, Social Studies and school climate analysis.
Dr. Rother is co-founder and President of the Association for Media Education in Quebec and co-founder and Board member of the Canadian Association of Media Education Organisations. Dr. Rother is also on the Board of Trustees of Technology for Youth, an NGO in Nigeria. In 2011, Dr. Rother was nominated for the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence.
