Instructional Development

What is competency-based learning?

A competency is “the capacity to carry out activities or tasks by drawing on a variety of resources, including knowledge, skills, strategies, techniques, attitudes and perceptions” (MELS, 2003). Competency-based learning then is designed with the end objective (i.e. what the student will know and/or be able to do at the end of the course) in mind and structures the students’ learning experiences around the desired outcome. It is characterized by an emphasis on a student-centered approach. It is also based on a constructivist learning theory (expanding upon the students’ existing experiences/knowledge/abilities/etc. to create new understandings/knowledge/abilities).

Do you have any quick fixes for pedagogical issues?

Depending on the type of support you request, we might suggest strategies that could produce immediate results. However, the best resolution to your concern could demand a little more time and commitment, or require continuous support over time, in order to see real changes and benefits.

Teacher Evaluation

Can I have an unofficial survey done for a course of my choosing?

Yes. Simply contact the Evaluation office and one (or more) surveys can be arranged for you. The information collected on your behalf belongs to you. The results are kept on file for 6 months after which time they are destroyed. If you wish, it is possible to leave them in your file to become part of your ‘permanent’ record, however, we must receive a written request from you to do this.

Do I have to complete the self-assessment and peer review parts of this process?

Yes, these components are mandatory requirements of the evaluation process. Collecting information from more than one source (the questionnaire) provides the hiring committees with more data upon which to base important decisions. It also increases the credibility of, and users’ confidence in, the entire process.

Who can I ask to do my Peer Review? (New teachers only)

We recommend asking a colleague within your department who has at least 3 years of teaching experience. If you cannot find someone in the department, then try someone teaching in a similar discipline. If that fails, it may be possible to get someone in from outside the College, but it would be advisable to contact our office first.
