Medical Emergency

• For medical emergencies that require immediate attention, please call 1000. Security will expedite a call to 911 and will be able to direct emergency services to the correct location while apprising them of the severity of the incident.
• If you call 911 from an internal phone, Security will receive a message that you have done so. Security is trained to assess and deal with emergencies.
• If you call 911 from a cell phone, Security will not receive a message and may delay prompt handling when instructions are not clear.
• For incidents that may require medical attention, but they are not urgent, please call 1500. Security, in conjunction with the Student First Response Team, will assess the situation and arrange transportation to the hospital, if necessary.

When security is called

1. Security will send a trained guard to the provided location to assist until Urgences-santé arrives.

2. If you can provide first aid assistance. Always wear gloves when in contact with blood.
3. Health Services may be called for additional assistance, Monday-Friday from 8:30-16:30 (ext. 1126)
4. When Security or Urgences-santé arrives, assist them in taking over the Emergency.
5. Complete and forward an Accident & Incident Report.

Major illnesses & injuries include

• Respiratory arrest, airway obstruction, severe breathing difficulties
• Cardiac arrest
• Severe bleeding
• Open abdominal wounds
• Acute abdominal or chest pain of unknown or doubtful origin
• Severe shock (including severe allergic reaction)
• Severe burns
• Seizures of unknown origin
• Unconsciousness
• Injuries to the back and/or cervical spine, especially involving falls
• Possible fractures (open or closed) to major (large) bones and multiple fractures
• Dislocations and/or severe sprains/strains of large body parts.
