Emergency Procedures

- IN EMERGENCY: call Security at local 1000 or use an Emergency Phone located on each corridor.

Know your Emergency Numbers
- In most corridors throughout the College, amber fluorescent lights indicate the locations of the red Emergency Phones. Look for the stainless steel box on the wall.
- In case of emergency, a quick glance down any corridor will determine the location of the nearest phone.
Know the Evacuation Plans
- Near exits and intersections throughout the College, evacuation plans on the wall indicate the locations of emergency exits, emergency phones, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits on that floor.
10 THINGS TO REMEMBER:
- You may hear the alarm, possibly followed by an announcement telling you what the emergency is. You may hear the order to evacuate or to stay where you are.
- If no announcement is heard, you should start to evacuate.
- If you are in a classroom and no lockdown order is given, calmly tell your students to leave the building. Lead them out and follow the instructions of searcher-monitors. If a lockdown order is given, use the deadbolt on the door and move everyone as far away from the door as possible.
- If you are in an open area, and the order to evacuate is given, follow instructions from searcher-monitors.
- Employees should not attempt to return to their offices to retrieve valuables or drive their cars out of the parking lot.
- If you are in an open area, and the order is a lockdown, try to find an enclosed space as quickly as possible, such as any classroom, lab or office.
- During an evacuation, once you are outside, make your way to Place Alexis-Nihon.
- Careful crossing the street, police do not always get there in time to shut down traffic.
- If Place Alexis Nihon is not safe, you’ll be told to get to the Hall Building at Concordia University, 1455 de Maisonneuve West.
- Inside Place Alexis Nihon or Concordia, wait for instructions for returning to the College; the Dawson website will post information on any delay longer than an hour.
Ongoing review of emergency procedures
As part of our ongoing review of emergency procedures, the College will begin issuing a reminder to all employees by e-mail twice each term, once in August and October and again in January and March;
- Regarding emergency procedures and the roles of responsibilities of all 10,000 members of the community.
- To ensure that faculty, students and staff understand; what is expected of them, if an emergency situation or exercise arises.
- A permanent feature on the student portal will help to make students aware of, how they need proceed in the event of an emergency.
It is important to remember that the College’s active role in an emergency is most intense in the first 10 minutes (or less) of a real emergency; before the City’s emergency services arrive on the scene.
Once police and fire officials arrive, we must obey their directives.
It is also important to note that for the past 6 years, our evacuation drills have shown that we can safely evacuate the entire building in under 10 minutes. For this reason is why we value the cooperation of every member of the Dawson community.
