English and French Placement Test Information for Day Students
After admission to Dawson College and before beginning their studies, newly admitted students are required to complete an English and/or French Placement Evaluation. This test is used to measure aptitudes in English and/or French so that we may place students in the appropriate English and/or French courses. To register for your classes, you must write your Placement Test(s).

*Registration for these tests will begin Wednesday, May 3, 2017. You must confirm your acceptance before you can register.
You must arrive no later than 15 minutes before the scheduled start time of your test. As these tests are timed, if you arrive late, you will not be given more time to write the test(s) and depending on how late you arrive, you may have to come back on another date to write your test.
Please note: Aninformation sheet was included in your online Admissions Package explaining how to register yourself for your Placement Test(s). Please follow the instructions to register yourself for your test(s). This portal is also used to communicate with you which test(s) the College is asking you to write, and this is also where you will go to check your Placement Test(s) results.
You must be registered to write your test. Should you arrive at the test and are not registered to write it, you will only be able to write it if space permits.

Important for non-high-school students: If you are transferring from another CEGEP or have a degree from a CEGEP or University, you may be eligible for an exemption. Please consult the Exemption Request Form , to see if you meet the criteria. If you think you do, please fill the form out and send it in immediately to the address listed at the bottom of it.

General Information
I want to register for my placement test(s) but do not know how.
APlacement Test information sheet was provided in your Application Status portal.
I want to register for my placement test(s) but cannot log into to MyDawson.
The MyDawson (omnivox) user account is separate from the Application Status portal. Please make sure to click on “First time visiting MyDawson? Click here” to create your account, if it is your first time using this.
I cannot attend the placement tests because I have an important exam/activity at my high school / because I live out of town and/or will be out of the city / I missed the placement test due to an emergency. I need a new date.
If you have already registered yourself for a test date, you can go back and de-register yourself and then choose a date that you can attend. If you have any questions or concerns, please send an e-mail to the English/French Placement Coordinator at placementtest@dawsoncollege.qc.ca. I live out of town, can the tests be sent to my school?
No. The test(s) must be taken at Dawson College. Please consult the English/French placement information sheet provided in your Admissions Package documentation, available in your MyDawson portal to register for your placement test(s). As placement tests are mandatory, please make every effort possible to attend on one of the scheduled dates.
If you do not write your test(s), you will not be able to register for your classes in the upcoming semester. Contact the Coordinator at placementtest@dawsoncollege.qc.ca as soon as possible, if you are unable to attend any of the current sessions to find out what other options may be available. I am interested in taking an English and/or French course at Dawson College. How do I register myself to take the Placement Tests?
If you have been accepted in a Day program, an information sheet was included in your online Admissions Package explaining how to register for your test(s). If you are planning on taking a course through our Continuing Education department, you must contact them directly.
I have received my acceptance letter from Dawson, but I did not receive any information about my placement test(s).

I am a student from an English or French high school in Québec; do I have to write both tests?
All students from English and/or French high schools in Québec are required to write the English placement test. Students who have graduated from a Québec high school up to 3 years prior to being accepted at Dawson College will be automatically placed in a French course, according to their final Ministerial grade.
I am a student from out-of-province / I am an international student, do I have to write both tests?
All students from high schools outside of Québec or from outside of Canada, are required to write both the English and French placement tests. Please consult thePlacement Test information sheet if you have yet to read it.

How do I know which test(s) I have to write?
When you go to register for your Placement Test(s), you will only be prompted to register for the test(s) that we have determined you must write. For a general idea, please consult thePlacement Test Explanations document.
Do I have to study for these tests?
No. These tests are used to help us place you in the correct section of college-level English and correct level of French.
Are dictionaries allowed?
No. Do not bring them.
I do not speak or write French.
If you have been asked to write your French Placement Test, then you are required to register and attend. Once at the test, you will be asked to fill out the first part of the test (profile questions). If you do not attend, you will not be able to finalize your internet registration for the upcoming semester.
What do I have to bring with me to the tests?
- Print out of your Confirmation Receipt (we accept this via smartphone or tablet, but please have the page loaded)
- Photo ID
- 2 Blue Pens
- 2 Pencils
I might be a little late.
The tests are timed and if you arrive late, there is no guarantee that you will be admitted to write your test. When you register, please select a date where you know you can arrive on time or send an e-mail to the Placement Test Office at placementtest@dawsoncollege.qc.ca. Please make sure to include your full name and student number in your email.
How long are the tests?
The English Placement Test can take anywhere from 60-75 minutes.
The French Placement Test is approximately 45 minutes.
Exemption Requests (for non-high school students only)
I believe I should be exempt from taking the English and/or French placement test(s).
Please consult theExemption Request Form, read it thoroughly, and fill it out if you believe you meet the conditions for exemption before returning it and all requested documentation. Please make sure to send it in well before the deadline stated on the form.
If you are not being asked to write anything, then there is nothing for you to be exempt from. For instance, if you have an English Placement result, you do not need to apply for an exemption from that test as you are not being asked to write it.
You must fill out the form as completely as possible in order for your exemption request to be considered. If you are a high school student, do not fill out the form, as this does not apply to you.

I am transferring from another CEGEP and have already completed my first year English and/or French courses, do I need to write any placement tests?
If you are transferring from another CEGEP or program within Dawson College and have completed your first year English and/or French courses, you may already be exempt. For a general idea of what you may be asked to write, please consult ourPlacement Test Explanation document.
To check, log into the Placement Test Registration and Results portal and if you have a result, you do not need to retake the test. Read the information provided to you in the Placement Test Registration and Results portal thoroughly, before emailing the coordinator at placementtest@dawsoncollege.qc.ca. Please make sure to include your full name and student number in your email.
I have submitted my exemption request, but I have not received a response from the Placement Test Office.
The exemption process can take up to two weeks. If you do not receive a response after two weeks, please send an e-mail to the Placement Test Office at placementtest@dawsoncollege.qc.ca. Please make sure to include your full name and student number in your email.
Results
How can I find my placement test results?
You can find your results by doing the following:
- Log in to your MyDawson account
- Click “My Intranet”
- Click “Placement Test Registration and Results”
- Select “Results”
Please note: aninformation sheet will be handed out upon completion of your placement test(s), which will indicate when your results will be available and what they mean.
I think I was placed in the wrong level of French or English.
Please contact the English and/or French department at 514-931-8731, ext. 1293.
There are no results listed for me on the website.
If your English and/or French placement results are not available at the expected time, please check again in a day or two. If the problem persists, please send an e-mail to the Placement Test Coordinator at placementtest@dawsoncollege.qc.ca. Please make sure to include your full name and student number in your email.
It is your responsibility to contact the Placement Test Coordinator if your results are unavailable at the expected time. Please allow for a 24-48 hour turnaround time for a reply. Placement test results are required in order to register online for the upcoming semester, please notify the coordinator as soon as possible if your results are not showing up in the portal.
