How do I find the literature I need in order to do my research?
Many college researchers find it difficult to obtain the necessary resources to do a thorough literature search, because our libraries don’t have the same subscriptions as a university library. The CDC, REBICQ and l’ARC have all looked into purchasing subscriptions, but the cost is prohibitive (~$20,000 per year per college). However, it’s often possible to find full-text publications and e-books using other sources.
Dawson Library
Dawson’s library hosts a page listing a number of research resources for faculty. Check out their list of resources, and request an inter-library loan if they don’t have your material on hand (fees typically apply).
Literature on Education & Pedagogy
If your research is on education, you’re in luck! There are many sources to find full-text journal articles, conferences proceedings and books. The Centre de documentation collegiale has over 35,000 books, articles and other sources on college teaching. You can also request an access code (email info@cdc.qc.ca), which gives you access to subscription-only databases, including CBCA Education, ERIC Plus Text, ProQuest Education Journals (ProQuest), the Canadian Electronic Library (ebrary), eBook Collection (EBSCOhost) and EdITLib (Global U).
BCI Card
Since l’ARC facilitated an agreement in 2011, the Bureau de cooperation interuniversitaire (formerly CREPUQ) has issued cards to college teachers that enable them to access university library collections. You can borrow books, and access some online databases and full-text articles in person using the computers at a university library. Request a BCI card (valid for 1 year, renewable) by completing the online form on our website.
Other Sources
There is a strong push to make all publically-funded research publications available through open access—the Tri-Council in Canada adopted an Open Access Policy in May 2015 requiring all funded researchers to make published journal articles freely available. Some authors post their papers to their personal websites, or use other repositories. Check out ResearchGate, the Registry of Open Access Repositories, Google Scholar, OpenDOAR and institutional repositories (e.g. McGill digital repository). It’s often possible (albeit time consuming) to obtain PDFs of scientific articles by emailing the authors directly.
