Program Information
Diagnostic Imaging is a three-year program.
The diagnostic imaging technologist prepares patients for imaging procedures, positions patients on the equipment, determines and sets the technical parameters, and processes the images for the radiologist to interpret and diagnose. Diagnostic imaging technologists can work alone, but usually work in close interaction with a multidisciplinary team.
Among the skills students in the Diagnostic Imaging program will acquire are:
- safely operating medical imaging equipment used to diagnose disease
- recording and processing images on digital storage media
- caring for patients undergoing examination
In the third year of the program, students gain valuable clinical experience by working and studying in affiliated health centres.
Career Opportunities
Graduates receive a DEC, which entitles them to write the examination of l’Ordre des technologues en imagerie médicale,en radio-oncologie et en électrophysiologie médicale du Québec (OTIMROEPMQ). Those who successfully complete this examination become registered technologists; they are able to work across Canada and in many other countries. Graduates must meet provincial French requirements before being granted a work permit in Québec.
Graduates of this program may work in general radiography (including emergency room) and/or radioscopy (including operating room), ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and other imaging modalities.
