Frequently Asked Questions

When is ethics review by the REB at Dawson College required?

Research ethics review is required for:

  1. Researchers (both Dawson researchers and researchers from other institutions) who wish to conduct research with human participants (students and/or staff) at Dawson College and,
  2. Dawson Researchers under the auspices of Dawson College, who wish to conduct research with human participants external to the College.

What are the institutional check and balances I need to do before I can begin my research project?

As of the Fall 2015 semester, Dawson College has two separate but concurrent processes for managing research at Dawson College. Dawson researchers and external researchers who wish to conduct research involving human participants must now apply for institutional approval and ethics approval. Regarding the institutional review process, contact the Research Coordinator by email at research@dawsoncollege.qc.ca. For any questions regarding the REB or the ethics review process, contact the REB Coordinator, Daniel Tesolin by email at rebapply@dawsoncollege.qc.ca. Recruitment cannot commence without institutional approval and ethics approval.

I’ve submitted my application to the REB, what happens now?

Once you submit your application by email to rebapply@dawsoncollege.qc.ca;

  1. The REB Coordinator will forward your application to the Research Coordinator for institutional review. (Please make sure that all your attachments are in one email, this helps us a lot. If you have a lot of attachments, consider using file-compression software such as PeaZip)
  2. The REB Coordinator will conduct a preliminary review, to ensure that all the form(s) are filled out properly, and all supporting documents are included. If there are items missing, the REB Coordinator will inform you and ask you to resubmit your application with the proper documents. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  3. After the preliminary review, your application will then be assigned a delegated/expedited review or full board review.

What do I do if I am unsure if ethics review is required for a project?

In unclear situations it is the REB’s mandate to determine whether or not ethics review is required. When in doubt, and to ensure ethical standards are consistently upheld, researchers are asked to present any project to the REB for a determination on whether or not ethics review is required. Please send a detailed description of your project and any supporting documents to the REB Coordinator at rebapply@dawsoncollege.qc.ca. Depending on the complexity of the submitted documents and the REB’s workload, you should receive a response in 5-6 business days.

How long does the ethics review process take?

The REB intends to communicate the results of the review to the researcher within 10-13 business days after a scheduled REB meeting or notice of a delegated review. If you have a more urgent need for review, please contact the REB Coordinator at rebapply@dawsoncollege.qc.ca to see what accommodations can be made.

What are the REB's office hours?

REB Coordinator is available by phone, email and in-person on: Mondays & Tuesdays: 09:00 – 17:00hrs and Wednesdays: 09:00 – 12:30hrs or by appointment on Wednesday afternoons, Thursdays and Fridays.
